  • Jackson Hole: 215"!

It's hard for any of us to forget last winter. 600" is A LOT of snow. And we didn't think we'd get anywhere near that any time soon. But then this winter rolled around. And things are starting to look quite bright for yet another amazing winter season with 215" of total season snowfall so far this season. For the record, FIVE FEET of that feel in ONE WEEK. Yep, it's shaping up to be a very, very good year because, not only are we continuing to get pounded by the west coast storm cycles, we also have much easier and faster access to the goods than we have in years past. The tram is proving to be the icing on the JH cake, offering skiers and snowboarders 4,139 feet of vertical lap after vertical lap. Ski Patrol has been working around the clock to help make the mountain safe and the snowpack stable. With the holidays now past, this is a great time of year to get up and explore the resort and ski some of North America's most famed slopes.

  • The Storm of the Century

    Webcam Teton Village: 12-26-08

People are still in disbelief. We all went to bed on Christmas Eve expecting some snow. Like 10" if we were lucky. Snow was sort of flurrying when we went to bed on the 24th. We thought Christmas Day would be a morning to sleep in, maybe open a present or two and then head to the Village for some mid-morning runs.

But plans of a leisurely breakfast and watching A Christmas Story on TBS one more time were thrown to the wayside when we got the snow report... Jackson Hole Mountain Resort was reporting 18" of new snow. Apparently, Santa didn't forget about us. And it didn't stop there. The snow just kept coming late into Christmas evening, with another 17" of new snow reported this morning! Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has now received over 5 FEET of new snow since Monday. Long-time locals were overheard saying they had never seen anything like it. Skiers were enjoying thigh-deep powder on groomed runs in-bounds!

This webcam shot shows the scene in Teton Village early this morning. Skiers and snowboarders were lining up long before the lifts were open, ready to access the fresh snow. For all those who head up to the hill today, please be careful. Ski Patrol has their hands full and can't monitor all Closed Zones. Even though it's incredibly tempting to duck that rope and poach a few powder turns, there's still plenty of amazing skiing to be had within the lines today.

Jackson Hole isn't the only resort touting major snowfall. Snow King Resort in the town of Jackson is reporting 11" in the past 24 hours, 19" in the past 48 hours and 24" in the past 72 hours. And Grand Targhee is also boasting 18" of new snow in the past 24 hours bringing their YTD snowfall to 177". The clouds are clearing. It's a great day to get out and enjoy the best skiing this area has seen this season! Throw the skis, snowboards and family in the car and go revel in the light, floaty, fluffiness of The White Room!

  • 11" of Powder and a New Tram at Jackson Hole!

    New Tram

Friday night kicked it off with the official unveiling of Jackson's new tram (check out JHMR's complete slideshow here). Fireworks shot into the air as the cover that's been keeping the big red box under wraps (literally) was pulled off and the public got the first views of the new tram car. With spot lights shining on it, fireworks lighting up the night, music rocking and snow falling, it made for quite a scene in Teton Village. Santa rapelled out of the bottom of the tram car before it was docked at the new tram building. Although chilly temperatures kept some away on Saturday morning, the first full V.I.P. tram cars made their way the 4,139 vertical feet to the top of the mountain before the public started loading at 11:00 a.m. Sunday saw more snow and the skiing was excellent. Of course, not nearly as good as it will certainly be today. We awoke to burried cars and trucks and two-foot tall snow banks in the town of Jackson and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is reporting 11" of new snow! If you're one of the lucky few who do not have to report to work today (or have just come down with a mysterious case of the powder flu), then head to the surrounding mountain resorts and enjoy! For those heading into the backcountry, make sure to check avalanche conditions prior to your trip. A wet early season followed by the December chill and now feet of snow is making for some less-than-favorable avalanche conditions this year.

    Tram Launch Weekend Announcement

There's not much more to say. It's been talked about for the past two years. It's been the subject of many a magazine article, press release and ad campaign. But tomorrrow, the talk will become reality when the first 100 passengers board the new faster, larger tram for its innaugural trip to the top of Rendezvous Mountain at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. If you want to be part of the biggest season in Jackson Hole's history, swing by Teton Village tonight at 5:30 for fireworks, a pint of the official Big Red Ale brewed by Snake River Brewery in Jackson, and some serious celebration. Make sure to be at the mountain early tomorrow to a) check out the launch of the new tram and b) reap the benefits of the blizzard snow that hit Jackson last night and is expected to continue to fall throughout today and this evening. • Tram Countdown: 8 Days

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's New Tram Dock

Christmas is coming early to Jackson Hole. Santa will officially arrive on Saturday, December 20th at 9:00 a.m. making Friday night (12/19) Christmas Eve. And no, I'm not just talking about Jacksonites playing to the beat of our own drummer. We didn't all gather around and decide that it'd be a good idea to shift the holiday season. I'm talking about the tram. This year, Christmas will come in two big, red boxes that are currently wrapped and ready to go in Teton Village.

The kick off the arrival of the new Big Red, will take place in Teton Village next Friday night. Join us as we gather in the Village at 6:00 p.m., awaiting the unveiling of the tram cars. Fireworks will mark this historic event, followed by music, food and live music throughout the Village.

On Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 a.m., there will be a Ceremonial Opening Service followed by VIP first cars. The tram will be open to the public by noon on Saturday. Saturday night should offer some classic apres as skiers and snowboarders reminisce about the day the tram returned to Jackson Hole.

Sunday, there is only one thing you need to do: ride the tram all day long. Start racking up your vertical feet for the season with each trip of 4,139 vertical feet! For more information, visit tramformation.com.

  • Big Red in the News

Jackson Hole is used to the usual media coverage in ski and snowsports industry magazines. But the return of the tram ("Big Red") is seeing lots of additional editorial love as the launch date nears. Only 11 more days until those big, red boxes take the first load of 100 passengers from the tram dock in Teton Village to the summit of Rendevous Mountain, 4,139 vertical feet above. In light of our big news, Jackson Hole has been featured in a series of national publications from the New York Times to today's article in the Dallas Morning News. Check out the coverage and, better yet, the great specials listed at the bottom of the article!
